Animation: Rick / Youtube

Hidden in the lowest parts of the planet’s mantle layer, the giant-sized and mysterious rock masses are among the largest and strangest of all structures on Earth.

There are two of these massive masses, called low shear large regions (LLSVP): one buried under Africa and the other under the Pacific Ocean.

These anomalies are so large that they can produce phenomena such as the South Atlantic Anomaly that develops inside the Earth and weakens its magnetic field.

While there are many opinions as to how and why these LLSVPs in the mantle layer arose, there is not much conclusive evidence.

But these giant masses have been known to have existed for a very long time, and according to many scientists they may have been part of the Earth since the giant collision that created the Moon; so these may be the ancient remnants of the collision between Earth and the hypothetical planet Theia.

The artist’s impression of the planetary collision. NASA / JPL-Caltech

According to this common view, the Mars-size planet Theia crashed into Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. A large fragment that broke from Theia and / or perhaps the Earth formed the Moon that orbits the Earth today.

It is unclear what happened to the rest of Theia. Did it disappear or it bounced back and went to the infinity of space is unknown.

Some researchers have suggested that the cores of these two colliding primitive planets may have fused into one nucleus, and that the chemical exchanges that occur with this epic union enabled life to flourish in the emerging world.

Now scientists are revisiting these enormous questions with a new proposition. This view, which also explains the mysterious LLSVP masses, links them to the hybrid Earth / Theia hypothesis.

The LLSVPs may represent the iron-rich ancient fragments and dense mantle of Theia, according to the new modeling conducted by researchers at Arizona State University. These masses may have sunk deep into the Earth’s mantle layer and remained buried there for billions of years when these two nascent worlds merge.

Researchers led by Qian Yuan, PhD candidate and first author of the study working on mantle dynamics at AUU, presented a summary of their findings at the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Conference two weeks ago: One of the models examined. But direct evidence for the existence of the striking object Theia is hard to come by ”

“We show that Theia’s mantle may be slightly denser than the Earth’s mantle, so the mantle material of Theia may have submerged to the bottom of the Earth’s mantle, transforming into thermochemical clumps that can cause seismically observed LLSVPs.

While LLSVPs have been predicted for years to be an alien souvenir that came with Theia, new research seems to be the most comprehensive formula ever. Findings under investigation for now, Geophysical Research Letters pending publication in the newsletter.

Beyond mantle modeling, the results are consistent with previous research suggesting that certain chemical signatures linked to LLSVPs are at least as old as the Theia collision.

“So these primitive materials may have originated from LLSVPs if these LLSVPs contain Theia mantle materials older than the Great Collision; It’s a pretty good explanation, ”writes Yuan and his co-authors.

How will the rest of the scientific community respond to the team’s findings? We’ll wait and see. But at least for now, we have another clue of what these mysterious anomalies might be; Moreover, this is the most magnificent statement ever made.

“This crazy idea is at least possible,” says Yuan. Science to the newsletter.

The findings were presented at the 52nd Lunar and Planetary Sciences Conference, which was run as a virtual event two weeks ago.

Author: Peter Dockrill / ScienceAlert.
